Coastal Management

Flagler County's Coastal Management is in the Engineering Department and is responsible for developing a Beach Management Plan and providing professional support for dune restoration and beach nourishment projects. Professional support includes:

• Manage projects from inception to completion, including conceptual planning, design, permitting with state and federal agencies, and construction.
• Work with Federal and State agencies to secure funding / cost-sharing for beach and dune restoration projects.
• Development and implementation of the Flagler County Beach Management Plan.
• Prepare and submit applications for Grant funding.
• Raising Awareness and Educating communities about the causes and consequences of erosion.
• Advocating for policies and initiatives that prioritize coastal protection and sustainable development.

The beaches and dunes in Flagler County have sustained severe damage from Hurricanes Ian and Nicole, in addition to the constant long-term erosion processes that have been eroding the beaches and dunes year after year. Beaches and dunes provide a natural habitat for the wildlife; protect life, property and infrastructure during coastal storms; and help sustain the local economy through tourism. It is in the County's best interest to plan for a sustainable and long-term strategy to rebuild the beaches and dunes and maintain them through periodic re-nourishment.
