Volunteering and Internships

Flagler County Emergency Management volunteers supporting community disaster preparedness efforts

Flagler County Emergency Management invites residents to get involved and volunteer in supporting initiatives that help the community get ready for, handle, bounce back from, and lessen the impact of disasters.

Emergency Management Support

Volunteers help support the daily operations of the Emergency Management Team within the Emergency Operations Center. Volunteer activities may include:

Making and answering phone calls and conducting computer data entry
Organizing, maintaining, preparing, and distributing materials, supplies, and equipment
Testing and maintaining communications equipment

Volunteers are required to average at least 16 hours of service per month during normal business hours and must pass a county background check.

Emergency Support Team

This is a team of community volunteers that will provide support to Emergency Management and first responders during significant emergencies. This support may include:

Responder hydration, nutrition, and rehabilitation
Assist with evacuation shelter support during emergencies

Interested individuals will be asked to:

Complete an application, which can be obtained by contacting us.
Affiliate with Flagler Volunteer Services and pass a background check.
Complete a short Emergency Support Team (EST) orientation / training (~3 hours).

Interested individuals are also encouraged to complete Flagler County CERT training (~30 hours).

Auxiliary Communications Team (AUXCOM)

This is a team of community volunteers that leverage multiple communications capabilities to assist and provide support to Emergency Management when primary communications systems are disrupted.

Interested individuals will be asked to:

Maintain an active General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) and/or Amateur Radio License
Complete the FEMA IS-100 and FEMA IS-2200 Interactive Web-based Classes
Participate annually in at least six (6) monthly nets, trainings, station maintenance days, drills, etc.
Affiliate with Flagler Volunteer Services and pass a background check

Internships

We are always open to discussing internship opportunities with students seeking experience and/or credit.

Interning with Emergency Management provides for:

The opportunity to get involved in a variety of projects that enhance our community's disaster preparedness.
Flexible hours and a customizable learning experience, that may include, but is not limited to:
- Developing emergency operations plans and continuity of operations plans
- Design and facilitate tabletop and operational exercises
- Delivery of public outreach presentations and social media
- Technology projects, weather research and more
- Emergency/disaster support in the Emergency Operations Center or at related field activities

Our unpaid internships are available year-round. Interns will be required to average at least 16 hours of service per week during normal business hours and must pass a county background check.
