Land Management to take 12 participants on a ‘Walk in the Park’
Published on March 05, 2026
March 5, 2026 – Flagler County Land Management is hosting its next limited guided tour series called a “Walk in the Park” at MalaCompra Oceanside Park on March 11.
This tour begins at 9 a.m. sharp on March 11 at MalaCompra Oceanside Park, 115 MalaCompra Road. It is limited to 12 registrants, and participants are asked to arrive a little early for the safety briefing, and additional details about the two-hour hike – which is described as “easy.”
The walk will be guided by Land Management Natural Resource Specialist Ralph Risch, a biologist with extensive, advanced knowledge of flora and fauna – an expert in his field.
“The 266-plus acres of the MalaCompra Oceanside Park extends from the shore of the Atlantic Ocean to the edge of A1A and include intact – though overgrown – coastal scrub habitat, a rare and disappearing land cover in Flagler County,” Risch said. “Coastal freshwater marsh habitat, equally rare, is also present here, as is the dune and strand habitat down near the ocean. We’ll see plenty of wintering migrant bird species, maybe gopher tortoises, and perhaps the otters who forage in the marsh and drainage ditches. We’ll identify plants associated with these habitats and discuss the local history of the site.”
Participants who register (an account must be created) – and sign the two waivers: liability and photo/video release – will meet at 8:45 a.m. on the north side of MalaCompra Road near the beach walkover.
Those who are participating should:
- Expect a two-hour hike
- Bring a water bottle
- Wear long pants and closed-toe shoes
- Use sunscreen and insect repellent as preferred
- Bring binoculars for enhanced bird watching
- Dress for weather – could be cold and rainy or warm and sunny
