Make A Plan
Plan Ahead - Don't Wait
When creating an emergency plan, assess your risks and consider how you’ll respond before, during, and after a hazard. Planning ahead gives you the best chance to stay safe and recover quickly.
Ask yourself:
- Is my home prone to flooding?
- Do I rely on medical oxygen?
- Do I have young children, a disability, or special needs?
- Do I own pets or livestock?
- Do I have access to transportation?
- If evacuated, where will I go and how will I get there?
- Do I need help evacuating?
- Do I have a family meeting place?
- Do I have more than one escape route?
Plan for Communication:
Disasters can strike anytime. If separated from relatives/friends during an emergency, staying in touch is critical. Create a family communication plan with:
- Designated meeting points
- Emergency contact numbers (including an out-of-area contact)
- Alternative ways to check in (texts, public alerts)
- Contact lists for workplaces, schools, doctors, and caregivers
- Plans to check in on neighbors and relatives when safe
Prepare Your Home and Property:
Inside:
- Review insurance policies
- Document home or business contents
- Install storm shutters or protect windows and doors
- Reinforce garage and entry doors
Outside:
- Secure important contact lists
- Know where you’ll go if you evacuate
- Plan for animals and anyone needing assistance
Having a solid plan brings peace of mind and helps ensure your family stays connected and safe in a crisis.
