Floodplains provide critical benefits to your community — natural flood storage and conveyance, improved water quality, groundwater recharge, and erosion control.

Flood Safety Measures

  • Evacuate immediately if advised — move to higher ground without delay.
  • Avoid floodwaters — never walk, swim, or drive through them. "Turn Around, Don't Drown."
  • Vehicle safety — if trapped in moving water, stay in the vehicle. If water rises inside, abandon the car and seek higher ground.
  • Stay informed — monitor local emergency officials, radio, and television.
  • Stay inside — go to the highest floor. Only enter the attic if absolutely necessary, and ensure you have an exit.

Property Protection Measures

Many existing structures remain susceptible to flooding. Minimize your exposure with these approaches:

  • Elevate the structure above flood levels
  • Retrofit to make the structure more flood-resistant
  • Construct barriers around property and structures

Before a flooding event:

  • Sandbag vulnerable entry points
  • Elevate furniture above predicted flood levels
  • Clear drainage ditches, stormwater inlets, and culverts near your home
